The 70/20/10 Rule ?
Okay, so I’m familiar with the 80/20 rule but I’ve now been introduced to the 70/20/10 rule. Apparently in the inner walls of Google the philosophy goes something like this:
- 70% of your efforts should go to your core product/service
- 20% to closely related side projects
- 10% to oddball projects
I’ve taken that and adapted it to my work. I found that I was already doing this anyway but now I have a better excuse for the oddball projects. I spend about 70% of my time working on other people’s websites. About 20% of the time I’m working on my own websites that I will be launching in the future. And about 10% of the time I read other blogs, work on my own blog, and volunteer to assist users in various online support forums.

Tim –
Good for you! You’ve taken one step toward effective management of your time. Awareness is only the beginning. I’m curious — does that 70% you spend working on client sites include sales and prospecting or does all your work come to you via referrals?
Best regards,

Hi Denise,
Thanks for the comments. So far all of my work comes by referrals. I have not yet dared start any proactive prospecting, advertising, etc. since my workload has been quite full.
