Spotlight and Saved Searches …. Where did my Email Go?

Apple-Spotlight-SearchI finally got around to playing with Apple’s “Smart Folders” and Spotlight recently. In an effort to increase my organization and reduce my collection points. I wanted to use Smart Folders to help gather information currently stored in various places around my computer.

My goal was to create a smart folder for each of my clients, Gary Pearl. The smart folder would thereby contain all of the HTML code, PHP code, graphics, photos, Gary’s address book record, events from iCal, and email messages. So I type “command-space” to bring up Spotlight, type ‘Gary Pearl‘ and press return.

Great! There it is, everything I need in one window! Now how do I save this as a smart folder? Well…. you can’t. You see spotlight and smart folders are really separate functions.

So I go to the File menu and select New Smart Folder. I type ‘Gary Pearl‘ into the search area and press return…. Hmmm… something missing here. Okay, there are a couple of folders in the results, some images, and even his address book card…. but where are the email messages? Why are the address book card and events in a section called “other” rather than nicely put into their own categories like they are in the spotlight search?

Apple, I want to be able to save a spotlight search as a saved folder!
