Over at Netcraft there is an article about the onslaught of security vulnerabilities found in phpBB. Here is one of the downsides of being popular… you become a good target of attacks. In the grand scheme of things phpBB probably isn’t a ton more vulnerable than other discussion forum software, however it makes for a good target.

Making sure my clients that use pbpBB are patched and safe has been challenging. Especially since many of those phpBB installations have been customized either with custom modifications or plug-in modules.

I have not gone to the extreme other hosting companies have by banning phpBB, however I do insist current versions are running.
