Offer Your Blog’s Feed?
Most blogs offer RSS, Atom, or XML feeds of their news. These feeds are specially generated files that include the main content of your blog in a very specific format. The format allows other programs such as news aggregators to display your blog outside of the context of your browser.
These feeds have other uses too. One website can syndicate the contents of of someone’s blog using their feed. As an example you could syndicate CNN’s news headlines on your website. Whenever somebody visits your website you can have the latest CNN headlines automatically displayed on your site. Very cool.
Offering these feeds can have a negative effect as well since you can’t necessarily control how your work is displayed. Other people could also easily take credit for your work. Consider this page. If you read my blog you might recognize the post.
In this example at least they are linking back to me with the name of my feed. Unfortunately most search engines probably are not giving my site much credit for the incoming link. The website has so many links the search engines probably consider it a link farm. And it is easy to tell that the website doesn’t offer any content of their own and makes money from their Google Advertisements.
Most bloggers are offering syndicated content. Keep in mind people might get creative if you are offering syndicated content and use your content in ways you might not be happy with. A business blog should weigh the pros and cons before deciding to offer feeds of their blogs.
