Fast Company article about email hoaxes

Fast Company LogoAbout once per month or so I host a mini Mac user group meeting for a few friends. In our most recent meeting we discussed various aspects of internet security such as viruses, spam, phishing, and identity theft.

We also discussed email hoaxes. Today I came across this article in Fast Company that discusses email hoaxes. I won’t give the seminar again here in this blog, but I will hit the highlights:

  • Even if the email is sent to you by someone you know, don’t trust it’s validity unless that person actually wrote the email first-hand.
  • If an email asks you to forward it to “at least 10 people” or “everyone in your address box” then it is likely a hoax.
  • Yes, many of these emails seem plausible and are quite believable; especially since someone you know forwarded them… but they are not.

The article is short (456 words) so it is worth a quick read by anyone who receives email.
