Apple Intel - Will Apple Sell Computers in the Short Term?

Okay, okay, so I had restrained myself all this time trying not to post about this subject. But it is about time I jumped on the bandwagon and started talking about the Apple / Intel announcement.

First, I’ll say I have no idea if this will be a good idea for Apple. I can only speculate and there are way more people out there who know a whole lot more about the topic than I do.

However, there is lots of chatter out there asking “who would buy a Mac in the next year before the Macintel machines are released?” Well, it seems to me people will fall into one of three camps.

  1. You don’t care what is under the hood, never knew to begin with what processor was in your mac anyway, and so long as it is a mac who cares. By the way, what is a processor? - I bet this represents the vast majority of computer purchasers
  2. I always want to be on the cutting edge of everything. I don’t mind sacrificing a little stability so I can always have the “latest and greatest”. While these people are probably the most vocal, I don’t think they represent many people
  3. I’m aware of the technological developments and the processor inside my computer. While I like advanced technology I want a machine that is stable, that’s why I purchased a Mac to begin with.

I’m mostly in the third camp. I’ll plan on purchasing one of the last computers to come off the assembly line before the switch to Intel. But not because I’m against Intel or think it won’t be a great computer. Rather this will allow me to have a stable machine running stable software during the time when people in camp 2 are fixing all of the problems so I won’t have to deal with them.

Therefore, IMHO I don’t believe Mac sales will decline while we wait for Macintel computers to arrive.

I’ll admit, I love the PowerPC. I’ve always been fascinated by the microprocessor, and the technology that makes up a PPC chip.

Admittedly, I’ve also been swinging more toward scenario #3 from above. I’ve been starting to care less as to which processor will be in my new Mac two/three years from now, as long as Apple’s hardware remains as beautifully-designed as it is now, and as long as Mac OS continues to as be rock-solid, and intuitive, and reliable as it is now.

I was planning on the purchase of a (loaded) Mac Mini within the next six months, and I don’t think I’ll wait until 2007. I will likely just go on and purchase one with the PowerPC processor in it. I have a very hard time believing that the PPC architecture will die off that quickly (as some speculate in the media) post the release of Apple’s Intel-based computers.
